Drivers can now get real time traffic and weather information by dialing 5-1-1 from most phones. This new traveler information system builds upon the highly successful Washington State Highway hotline that managed 4.6 million calls each year. Callers can also use 5-1-1 to get statewide construction, mountain pass condition, and state ferry system information, as well as toll free numbers for passenger rail and airlines. TTY users can call 1-800-833-6388.

Work Zone Facts
in Washington

Traffic fines double in work zones and cannot be reduced, suspended or waived. Speeding or inattentive drivers in work zones could face speeding fines of up to $700 and a 60-day license suspension.

An overwhelming majority of people injured or killed in work zone collisions are drivers and passengers.

The most likely traffic incident occurs between noon and 3 p.m. on a clear or cloudy Wednesday in August as a result of speeding or inattentive driving.

• Over the past five years, there have been 41 drivers and workers killed in work zones • 3,493 work zone injuries • 5,655 work zone collisions

The three types of collisions are rear-enders, striking a fixed object and sideswiping. A concrete or jersey barrier is the most common object struck within work zones.
