Something old, something new: Summer fun on the horizon

In honor of wedding season’s arrival, May events on the Long Beach Peninsula can pretty well be summed up with the saying, “something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue.”

Something Old

Check out Loyalty Days on May 5-7 in Long Beach and Ilwaco.

The 67th annual Loyalty Days kicks off the month when it returns to the Long Beach Peninsula May 5-7. The peninsula’s Loyalty Days celebration is the longest consecutively running in the nation, and for good reason. Saturday’s festivities include the Kid’s Parade in Ilwaco and the Blessing of the Fleet at the Port of Ilwaco, as well as an oyster feed and Honor’s Banquet at the Long Beach Elks. Sunday begins with a cowboy breakfast followed by fire truck rides for kids, a lively parade and post-parade events.

Something New

The PPR Cape D Sprint Triathlon enters its third year on May 20. This year’s theme is “Outrunning Poverty” – all proceeds support Peninsula Poverty Response projects. Competitors swim Black Lake, pedal Highway 101 and run through Cape Disappointment State Park. Celebrate at Salt Hotel & Pub during the 2 p.m. after party.

Something Borrowed

The World’s Longest Garage Sale Weekend on May 26-29 stretches up and down the Long Beach Peninsula, and it’s truly a favorite among locals and visitors. It’s a treasure trove for bargain hunters, pickers, antique collectors and anyone interested in what’s interesting. Time falls by the wayside while wandering the World’s Longest Garage Sale, so give yourself a couple days to explore. Be sure to bring small bills. And leave room in your luggage to take home your treasure.

Something Blue

The Cape D Sprint Triathlon is May 20.

Spring is here and blue skies are on the horizon. Events like the Saturday Market at the Port of Ilwaco and the Willapa Harbor Kayak Day on May 20, as well as everything mentioned above, get you outdoors and into the sun. Anglers can look forward to the Surf Perch Derby on May 20, while family friendly fun can be found May through September at SummerFest, a collection of activities and concerts in downtown Long Beach.
