Late July and early August offer the perfect opportunity to get to know Pacific County, Washington – the area’s rich history and character will be on full display during the next three weeks, when summer events highlight lumber, fishing, rodeo and ranching.
Pacific County may be small in stature, but it has a huge personality. Best known for its seafood, Pacific County transcends the ocean that gives it its name – the rolling, wooded hills support the timber industry and inspire wood artists, and the county’s rodeo dates back more than 70 years. Coastal cowboys run cattle on low-lying pastureland and local dairies dot the countryside.
These reasons and more make mid-July through early August one of our favorite times of year. Here’s what to look forward to:
Tokeland Wood & Art Fest, Tokeland, July 22-23: Chainsaw artists, woodworkers and carvers converge on Tokeland during this annual event. The fun unfolds near the Tokeland Hotel. Live music will also be part of the fun at this free, family-friendly event. Tokeland is a bit off the beaten path, so take advantage of this great opportunity to pay a visit.
Deep Canyon Challenge Fishing Tournament, Ilwaco, July 28-29: This tournament isn’t all about the fish – contributions help fund local food banks. A barbecue and auction are set for Saturday evening after fishing finishes, and results should be posted as well.
Long Beach Rodeo, Long Beach, July 29-30: Remember those coastal cowboys we talked about? You’ll find them here at the 72nd annual Long Beach Rodeo, a PRCA-sanctioned event featuring rodeo favorites like bareback, saddle bronc, bull riding, roping, steer wrestling and barrel racing. Rodeo events take place at the Peninsula Saddle Club on Sandridge Road.
Jake the Alligator Man’s Birthday, Long Beach, Aug. 4-5: If you haven’t been to Jake’s Birthday it might be time to plan a trip. This summer event, based around the part-human, part-alligator oddity known as Jake the Alligator Man at Marsh’s Free Museum, features a little bit of everything. There’s a car show, live music, a burlesque bachelor party, lots of live entertainment, a bride of Jake competition and much more. A bit like Jake himself, this event is one you’ll have to see to believe!
Willapa Harbor Festival, Raymond, Aug. 4-6: The annual Harbor Festival in Raymond is a celebration of life on Willapa Bay and Willapa River. The event features live music, a parade, food and craft vendors and more. Held in beautiful downtown Raymond, the Willapa Harbor Festival is fun for every member of the family.
Surf ‘n Saddle Junior Rodeo, Long Beach, Aug. 5-6: If the Long Beach Rodeo features coastal cowboys, then the Surf ‘N Saddle Junior Rodeo highlights the Pacific Northwest’s beach buckaroos! Also held at the Peninsula Saddle Club, this rodeo is part of the Northwest Junior Rodeo Association.
